DUNHAM, Bernice, 93, born May 7, 1922 of Mattapan, MA, passed away peacefully in her sleep early on the morning of Saturday, February 06, 2016. Bernice was very active in her community and, among other things, was a Charter Member of The Clique Club of Boston, organized in 1949 in support of the Freedom House of Roxbury, and later, The Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts. This group of women and men also raised money each year to give as a scholarship to deserving young African American Women and Men on their way to college. They were deeply involved in other cultural events that took place in, and that came out of Roxbury, Massachusetts. In her later years she became deeply involved in the Mental Health Community serving as a Board Member of the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill (NAMI) of Massachusetts, Mattapan Chapter. Mrs. Dunham is preceded in her death by her husband Oscar (1995), her eldest son, Jean (2009), and her grandson Michael (2010). She leaves behind two sons, Gregory Dunham of Pennsauken, NJ and Victor Dunham of Mattapan, MA; a daughter, Stacey Dunham Burrell of Kennesaw, GA; and a very close cousin, Representative Gloria Fox of Roxbury, MA; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, great-great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Services will be held at All Saints’ Church, 209 Ashmont Street, Dorchester, MA, Friday, February 12, 2016 at 10:30a.m. interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 920 Adams Street, Dorchester, MA 02124. A repast will be held at the church immediately following interment. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress Street, #510, Boston, MA 02210.
